January-March 1973 the trail of the "plumbers" became know to Nixon. Nixon became scared even though the Watergate Scandal was not his idea, he thought his political career was indanger. He started handing out what was called, "hush money and slush funds." He paid the people to keep quite about the Scandal, thinking it would not hurt his career. But, infact it did the opposite. By giving them money to keep quite, he had messed with the investigation. The judges became known to this and he was charged with conspiracy, burgalary, illegal wiretapping, and illegal possession of eavsdropping equiment.

In March, Judge John Sirica recieved a message from James mcCord alleging a white house cover up.
The Senate looked back at former Presidentail campaign Activities finding that Nixon had fired his white house advisors John Dean and accepted the resignations of Haldeman and John Ehrlichman.

    The testimonies of John Dean, John Mitchell, Haldeman, and John Ehrlickman are given. On June 16, 1973 the testimony of Alexander Butterfield told of the White House tape recording system in the Oval Office. When they asked for the tapes Nixon refused, and claimed Executive Privilege
    In OctoberNixon's vice President, Spiro Agnew, resigned over allegations taking bribes while govenor of Mary Land. 
    October 20, 1973 the Saturday Night Massacre happened. Resulting in Attorney General Elliot Richardson and his assisstant william Ruckelshaus are both fired. Even more that ever the White House tapes are demanded to be handed over.
    Nixon still refused to hand over the tapes because he knew that the tapes would reveal his covering-up of the Watergate Scandal. He claimed he didnt want the tapes to be handed over because he had a fowl mouth and didnt want people to think of the President of the United States that way. So Nixon asked if he could have his personal secretary, Rose Mary Woods edit them. It was agreed.

The Tapes

August 30, 1974 the tapes were handed over, after editing, it was found that over 18 and a 1/2 minutes had been erased in 5 different spots. When they called Rose Mary Woods to the stand, she claimed the phone rang and she must have hit the record button instead of the off button. she claimned to have been on the phone for 13 mins. Another fact was it takes TWO buttons to record a tape, and only one to turn it off.

July 30, 1974

The House of Representatives Judiciary committee voted 27-11 to pass three impeachment charges.
